 Sensei Gary Lloyd -Head Instructor

Head Instructor

 In April 1947 Gary was born in Hardisty, Alberta. he moved to Calgary in 1952 .

Gary has been training in the martial arts over 30 years starting with Aikido in 1978 then switching to Tae Kwon-Do in 1980. Gary received his Black Belt  from Master Chong Han in 1983.

Competition Highlights

2004 -Continental Open Martial Arts Association Canadian Champion Black Belt Sparring (35 years and over)

Western Canadian Karate Championships -3 time Black Belt Gold Medal Winner (45 years and over)

2006 -As a member of team Alberta placed 7th at the WKA Canadian Championships/Team Canada Trials in Hull Quebec in the Heavyweight Black Belt +35 years Sparring Division.

2006 -Qualified as a member of Team Canada to compete at the 1st World Martial Arts Games in Victoria B.C. where he won a Gold Medal in the Heavyweight Black Belt +46 years Sparring Division.  Was chosen to carry the Canadian flag in opening ceremonies.

2008- Kicks Open Martial Arts Tournament Black Belt +35 Kata Gold Medal Winner 

2009- Tiger Balm International Black Belt +35 years Kata Gold Medal Winner

2010-  team Canada member at 5th world martial arts games in Los Vagas. placed 2nd in Korean hand forms, 3rd place in Japanese bladed weapons., 3rd place in sparing. (45+ yr black belt)

2011- Tiger Balm International Black Belt +45 years 2nd in hard style hand forms, 3rd in sparring

team Alberta qualifier for black belt 43+yrs, 1st place sparring, 3rd place 18+ korean hand hard style forms, 3rd 43+ hand hard style forms.

Additional Career Highlights

2006 -Gary along with Ed and Carol Laramie, the oldest members of Team Canada, were the official Team Canada flag bearers during the 1st World Martial Arts Games Opening Ceremonies in Victoria.

1998-2006 -Honorary Head Judge at the Canadian Ging Wu Open Martial Arts Tournament.

2006 -Voted the outstanding Senior Official at the Canadian Ging Wu Open Martial Arts Tournament.

2001 -Gary was recognized for his efforts as Head Judge at the Alberta Open Martial Arts Challenge.

2001 -Canadian Ging Wu Open Martial Arts Tournament Outstanding Forms Judge.

1999 -Gary was certified as a Level E referee and score keeper by the World Kickboxing Association.

1996 -Gary trained Northern Shaolin Kung Fu for 4 years reaching Intermediate Sash Level.

Gary has also had the pleasure of training with two world class martial artist- Bill (Super-foot) Wallace, movie star and retired undefeated World Middleweight Kick Boxing Champion and John Therien (World Kobudo leader) and Jiu-Jitsu, Kick Boxing instructor. 

Gary has been the owner and head instructor of the East Side Tae Kwon-Do Club for over 20 years and for the past 15 years has been the host of the Kids 4 Kids (16 years and under) Open Martial Arts Tournament in Beiseker.

At 70 years young Gary is still active and successful as a instructor and judge in the tournament circuit. At the present time he still teaches 2  Lil' Dragon classes, 4 traditional martial arts and 2 cardio kickboxing classes per week.
